What I'm Reading

The Reflective Practice of Teaching - The following was written for the blog of the Whole Child Initiative of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development

Teachers Should be Seen and Not Heard - The 2009 Teacher of the Year describes how everyone knows what the real problem is in education.

12 Mind/Brain Learning Principles in Action - This article relates the story of a student who becomes an active teacher and then a college professor who lectures. She discovers from her college students that "My course and hard work had made no impact on their teaching." This results in an exploration of how people learn. The author, Dr. Caine, now "consults throughout the world on the brain/mind and learning.

Digitizing Literacy: Reflections on the Haptics of Writing - This is an open access research publication which discusses how the brain processes information during the physical act of writing versus typing. Talk about "Hands-On" learning! While there is a lot of technical jargon in this article it clearly emphasizes the mind-body connection and how "learning and cognition are inextricably tied to and dependent upon our audiovisual, tactile, haptic, probing of our surroundings."

Edutopia Learning Style Quiz - I think this is important regardless of the recent discussion on the lack of research actually tying mode of instruction to learning style and academic growth. And besides, what is the BEST definition of learning style anyway?

Venture capital and technology - Money is always an issue in education and so is access to technology.

I have tried making what we learn relevant to how this knowledge can be used in the world. For example, this TED Talk makes the connection quite nicely.

Credit By Demonstrated Mastery - Guidelines for students to test out of classes and get credit toward early graduation.

Student Centered Learning - Research based discussion about learning and student behavior.

Mr. Dr. Science Teacher - Going gradeless....any teacher's dream!
